“To Labor With Love” at FJORD

The Form Review is a simple attempt to increase dialogue within art journalism and highlight the subjectivity of a traditional exhibition review.  Artists/curators/responsible parties of an exhibition are invited to respond to five short prompts.  In turn, a representative of the St.Claire views the exhibition and independently responds to the same five prompts.  Both sets of “form answers” are published in tandem on the St.Claire website. To participate drop us a line at hark@the-st-claire.com

form_review_eye1 Responses by Elisa Gabor, Curator

 1. What is hidden in this exhibition?  What is in plain sight?

In Plain Sight — Intense, compartmentalized effort. The scientific method and some very un-scientific methods. A bias toward photography.

Hidden — The desire to succeed.

2. Who would be this exhibition’s parents?  What might it’s children look like?

Gregg Popovich and Steve Irwin. Just an incessant budding off of a youngest, middle, and eldest, each with their own approach to everything.

3. Describe one moment in this exhibition.

Two people push on either side, and one powers the drill. Then those are for cleaning your hands.

4. This exhibition answers/asks the following question:

Are there really 17 artists in here?

5. You should message this exhibition if…

your research relies on experiencing a transformation of your perceptions of yourself and the environment.

1. What is hidden in this exhibition?  What is in plain sight?

Muted grays whites and tan skin colors mask rosy insistent pastel colors – the awkward seriousness of adolescent politics and sexuality. From a pee stain on an old tank top, to an extra surface glosses on photographic prints, an acceptable kind of beauty is shown but an obsession with the body and identity is everywhere seeping through.

2. Who would be this exhibition’s parents?  What might it’s children look like?

These are the children of the parents of the 90s — taking out the colors and themes, trying them on and testing them for renewed potency.

3. Describe one moment in this exhibition.

Bodies shifting — figuring out where to stand, to look from, how to start. And how exactly to place that arm — Where did it go last time we did this?

4. This exhibition answers/asks the following question:

What do we do when there is no outside, when even Rube Goldbergian absurdity has fallen to aesthetic effect?

5.  You should message this exhibition if…

You prefer to finish yourself off but you still want someone one to cuddle with as you drift off to sleep.
